Leave early for Mto wa Mbu in your overland truck. You will be crossing the border from Kenya into Tanzania, so make sure you have your passport with you. Visit Mto wa Mbu, a delightful small village well off the tourist trail that offers a fascinating glimpse of small-town African life.

You will be taken on an excursion into the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Crater after getting up early and packing your camping equipment and personal belongings into a six-person jeep. Explore this incredible, perfectly intact volcanic caldera for three to four hours during your safari in the crater. There will be opportunities to observe black rhinoceros, lions, leopards, elephants, impalas, zebras and hippos. In addition to excellent game viewing all year round (there are some 30,000 animals living in the crater), the crater floor offers great photography opportunities. Next, we will visit the Serengeti plains, which are vast and open. It is perhaps the quintessential image of Africa – the land of the hoofed animals and fierce predators – when it is green after the rains, then brown and burnt during the dry season. While you drift off to sleep, listen out for the sounds of nocturnal animals in the Serengeti.

Start your day with a game drive at dawn. After enjoying a morning of wildlife watching, you will return to camp for brunch at about 11 a.m. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the shade, just like the animals, before heading out again as the day begins to cool. It is likely that you will return from this second game drive in time for dinner. The option of taking a balloon flight over the park is also available this morning – in place of some of the game drives scheduled for today. Pre-booked participants will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site. Obtain some amazing photographs as you glide through the dawn after a safety briefing. There are times when you will ascend, giving you an overview of the vastness of the plains and the movements of the teeming herds in the early morning. Following landing, you will be treated to a five-star bush breakfast and then returned to camp.

In Arusha, take a moment to stretch your legs, then jump back in the vehicle to take in the ever-changing scenery, read your favorite book, or get to know your fellow travelers better. In Lushoto, you will be based in an old German colony that is home to the Wasambaa people. At approximately 1400 meters, this highland town is situated. This evening, you will be camping within the grounds of one of the oldest hotels in Africa.

Experience the beauty of the Usambara Mountains today – a beautiful, unspoilt area of Tanzania. There are fewer tourists in this part of the country than on the coast and in the north, so it is more fresh than the other parts of the country. Despite the beauty of the surrounding mountains and rainforests, the real jewels here are the people and villages of the region. A visit to a small local community will offer you an opportunity to experience some hospitality. It is a short walk from your base to the breathtaking viewpoint of Irente. For this trip, it is advisable to pack a day pack with water and snacks. Take a picnic lunch and visit a local cultural project based on an Irente farm on your way back.

Take a ferry to Zanzibar, Africa’s ‘Spice Island’. This island nation has a colourful history ranging from slave traders to Arabian sultans and fruit exporters. It boasts white-sand beaches, cobblestone alleyways, and fragrant bazaars. A sight of traditional dhows sailing along the coast evokes the atmosphere of the island centuries ago. It is best to visit Zanzibar’s old city, Stone Town, by foot, exploring the markets, shops, mosques, palaces and courtyards. Perhaps a drink from a bar overlooking the seafront would be a good idea when the sun is setting. In addition, seafood curries can be found at local restaurants. The night will be spent at a basic inn in Stone Town.

It is recommended that you get up early in order to catch the ferry at 7.30 am to the mainland, and then head for Mikumi. Your first camp spot is approximately an eight-hour drive away, but you will have a great opportunity to see the renowned Tanzanian landscape along the way. The park is home to large plains dotted with baobab trees and tamarind trees, as well as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, lions, and leopards. Upon arrival, your guide will show you the ropes (literally) and help you set up and get comfortable in your tent for the night.

This morning, wake up early to embark on a 4WD game drive into Mikumi National Park with local experts. Elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, warthogs, wildebeests, and impalas inhabit this less-touristed park, which is home to impressive numbers of elephants, hippos, giraffes, zebras, zebras, buffalo, and warthogs – as well as predators if you are lucky. On the outskirts of Iringa, we will set up camp on the grounds of a farmhouse (approximately five hours away). The area is surrounded by natural bushland, making it an ideal location for birdwatchers. Spend some time stargazing before retiring for the night in this rural setting.

The journey to your campsite in Chitimba will take approximately ten to twelve hours. The country of Malawi, which is often called the ‘warm heart of Africa,’ is dominated by its lake, which covers almost a fifth of the territory and provides a livelihood to thousands of Malawians. The Lake Malawi is home to a variety of fishermen, fish traders, canoe makers, and net makers. It is common to see fisherman in bwatos (dugout canoes constructed from hollowed tree trunks) fishing on the still lake at dawn.

In addition to being the oldest colonial settlement in Zimbabwe, this colonial settlement is the ideal place to explore the ruins of Great Zimbabwe. In the 11th century, a monarchy ruled from this ancient city, which has now been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Explore this intriguing site for a few hours before returning to camp.

You may want to consider getting up early and visiting Matobo National Park. There is a significant population of black and white rhinos in this area, which makes this optional activity a unique opportunity to experience these magnificent animals up close and personal. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to view other game species, such as klipspringers, leopards, warthogs, springhares, among others, while gaining an understanding of the local plant and tree species. In addition to its impressive wildlife park, this is also the site of the grave of Cecil John Rhodes, the founder of Rhodesia and of De Beers diamonds. There are many sites within the park where important ceremonies are still held, which further emphasizes the spiritual and cultural significance of the Matopos area to local San communities. Explore the local history and culture by taking a short hike to view San paintings.

After leaving Bulawayo, drive for six hours to Victoria Falls. An impressive sight, the falls which bear the area’s name are 1.6 kilometers wide and fall 108 metres into a narrow gorge below. A visit to the falls themselves is optional, but we highly recommend it. Groups who book ahead will be required to tour the site with a local guide, and we believe that viewing waterfalls should be an uninterrupted sensory experience. When it rains, the spray produced by this feat of nature can rise 400 metres and can often be seen from a distance of several kilometers. Mosi oa Tunya, or the ‘Smoke that Thunders’, is the local name for Victoria Falls. However, travelers should not be discouraged during the dry season. There will be a clear view of the falls and an opportunity to see the islets in the river below. There will be a variety of activities available at a local activity center under the direction of your leader.

This morning, we have the privilege of visiting Victoria Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world. This waterfall is approximately a mile wide, and it has a drop of 108 metres. There are times when the spray from the falls can be seen from several kilometers away. A small island can be seen in the river below the falls during the dry season, when the falls are not obscured by a layer of spray. To fully appreciate the power of this staggering curtain of water, it is necessary to experience it in person. Mosi oa Tunya translates as ‘smoke that thunders’ in local dialects. Your guide may also be able to suggest a range of other activities.

After this, we will travel to Chobe National Park in Botswana (approximately 3 hours), which is one of The Intrepid Foundation’s projects. Learn about the Trust’s role in anti-poaching and the rescue and rehabilitation of wildlife. In addition, you may have the opportunity to meet any rescued or orphaned wildlife that is currently under their care. The next stop on your journey is Botswana’s first national park, which is renowned for its large population of elephants. The Chobe River is a popular place for them to swim.

A morning game drive awaits you in the early hours of the morning. As you explore the park, you will have the opportunity to observe a variety of wildlife, including exotic birds and other animals. The Chobe River is not only home to the Chobe icon, the elephant, but also to hippos and crocodiles, which like to sun themselves on its banks. There are also cheetahs that come down for a drink. There are hundreds of species of birds to be observed here, including eagles, kingfishers, and marabou storks. One of the best ways to enjoy the park’s wildlife is to take an optional cruise down the Chobe River in the afternoon.

As of today, you will be entering Namibia, driving from Kasane to Ngoma Bridge, and then on to your camp at Bagani . Located along the river, Bagani is a small, friendly town with some good hiking trails. Additionally, there are many nice spots where you can simply relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Historically, this area was the residence of the local Mbukushu kings. It is likely that you will have the opportunity to visit an ATM as well as a market or shop today. After crossing the border into Botswana, drive south along the Okavango Panhandle to Seronga. Upon arrival in the delta, you will leave your vehicle and board a transport vehicle for a four-hour journey into the delta. Explore the Okavango Delta with your mokoro team after crossing the swamps to Gao Island. The mokoro (small dugout canoe) is paddled by a tribal member who poles it along the waterways. The streams are lined with reeds and lily pads, and birds are startled by the mokoros, which rise from the long grasses. You may occasionally hear hippos grunting as you travel along. Your first night here will be spent camping on an island far from civilization.

It takes approximately six hours to reach Etosha National Park. There is a wide variety of wildlife in Etosha National Park, including five rare or endangered species: black rhinos, Hartmann’s mountain zebras, black-faced impalas, roan antelopes, and the tiny Damara dik-dik. Due to the large, sparsely vegetated pans and man-made waterholes in Etosha, game viewing is relatively easy. While viewing the pans is difficult due to the dense bushland surrounding them, there are enough clearings, pans, and waterholes to generally be able to observe them. Spend the evening at Namutoni before embarking on an optional evening game drive. It is possible to upgrade your accommodation here.

Visit Etosha National Park for a full-day game drive. It takes approximately nine hours to travel to the mountain of Spitzkoppe, the ‘Matterhorn of Namibia’. These magnificent granite peaks are surrounded by some of Namibia’s most stunning wild lands. In terms of height, this mountain is 1987 metres (6519 feet) high and 700 million years old. While you should not attempt to climb to the top, there are some excellent hikes in the area that are rich in plant life and also feature some bush paintings. In addition to its spectacular beauty, the Spitzkoppe is known for its thousands of ancient Bushmen rock art paintings, which can still be seen today. You should keep an eye out for the sunset from your bush camp this evening. The landscape often takes on a brilliant orange and red hue as the sun sets.

There is another free day today for you to enjoy this fun beachside town. A visit to the Swakopmund Museum and the lighthouse will provide you with a taste of history and culture. Adventure sports enthusiasts may enjoy the numerous outdoor activities available in this town – it is Namibia’s adventure sports mecca.

It will take approximately six to seven hours to drive to Sesriem, your base for exploring the Namib Desert region. The Namib Desert is most famous for its vast dune fields, the most spectacular of which is located near Sesriem Canyon. A gorge 30 metres deep was carved into the gravel deposits by the Tsauchab River approximately 15 million years ago. As the river flows out to the dune fields along the coast, it eventually dries up in a clay pan at Sossusvlei, where it flows into the desert. With their magnificent flaming tones and brightly coloured sands, the dunes are among the highest in the world.

A dramatic sunrise view over a vast sand sea can be enjoyed by waking up before dawn and scrambling to the top of the dunes. A spectacular setting for your brunch is created by the dramatic changes in color. Afterward, you will board a pickup truck in order to visit Sossusvlei, an incredible salt and clay pan that is just nearby (approximately 30 minutes each way). We invite you to spend some time exploring this amazing and mysterious feature of the desert. In the afternoon, proceed to your camp past the small town of Bethanie (approximately six hours). The camp has basic facilities, such as showers, flush toilets, Wi-Fi, and upgrades available upon request.

Before heading south into Namibia’s vast desert lands, take a look at the town of Bethanie. Fish River Canyon can be reached in approximately three to four hours. One of the largest canyons in the world, Fish River Canyon measures 500 metres deep and over 160 kilometres in length. When the riverbed dries out completely during the dry season, only a few puddles remain. The river can become a spectacular raging torrent in the wet season, following the summer rains. Regardless of the time of year, the granite rocks offer spectacular photographic opportunities as the sun sets.

The journey from Fish River Canyon takes about 5 hours to Noordoewer in southern Namibia. Enjoy camping along the scenic banks of the Gariep (Orange) River, the longest river in Lesotho, which stretches over 2200 kilometers (1367 miles). Located high in the Drakensberg mountain range, the river flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Alexander Bay in South Africa. Several diamond deposits can be found along the Namibian coast due to the Orange River, which transports diamonds and creates deposits.

There is a beautiful countryside surrounding the hotel, and if you have the time, you will be able to explore some of it. Take a stroll in the nearby mountains and farms before retiring for the evening.

Day 48: Cape Town, South Africa

Upon arrival in Cape Town, your trip will come to an end. In addition to its stunning coastline, modern cityscape, nearby mountains and a variety of vineyards within easy reach, Cape Town is one of the most exciting cities in Africa. We do not provide accommodation for tonight, but you can arrange this at the time of booking.
